Latest TfL Assessment Update

New TfL exam and fee information added

This section gives learners a clear update about the current TfL topographical, SERU and English assessment requirements. Brotherz Group training remains separate from the official TfL assessment and is designed to help learners prepare with confidence.

💻

Computer-based assessment

TfL says the Topographical Assessment is computer based and learners need a basic understanding of how to use a mouse. Training should therefore include on-screen map reading and computer-style practice.

📍

Pier Walk assessment centre

Topographical testing is currently undertaken at TfL’s Driver Assessment Centre at Pier Walk. Candidates should always check their TfL booking confirmation before travelling.

£

New assessment fees

TfL changed some taxi and private hire assessment fees from 9 March 2026. The PHV Topographical first attempt is now £40 and the re-sit is £30.

🧭

Route planning carries most marks

TfL’s guidance says the assessment is scored out of 100 marks. The three route-planning questions carry 66 marks and the multiple-choice questions carry 34 marks.

Where learners lose marks

Marks can be lost for not starting or ending in the correct place, planning the route in reverse, not following the most direct route, or making a turn prohibited by map symbols.

SERU and English requirement

TfL says new PHV applicants from 1 April 2023 must pass both the English speaking and listening test and the SERU assessment before they can be licensed.
